Grandmothers Are Not Babysitters

Here’s what to do if you want them to help with childcare.

The dictionary defines babysitter as “to care for children usually during a short absence of the parents.”

Recently, I observed a daughter (under 30) treating her mother with contempt in the hair salon.

As interaction goes on, the grandmother is a live-in babysitter caring for three children under nine, and she has been with the daughter’s family for many years.

First, it’s rude when adult children expect their mothers to be their babysitters. At the same time, their mothers struggle to pay essential bills or pay for a hairstyle they want.

You are right.

The above grandmother may want to be mistreated and she gets what she deserves — fair enough.

In 2024, many grandmothers are wiser and want to live a meaningful life after caring for their spouses, children, and dozens of family members. Many need a break from a full-time family career and to focus on what makes them live longer and healthier.
