The Memorable B-Sides series spotlights writing and art submitted to us that weren’t selected for print, but that are fantastic in their own right. Each introduction tells you why we returned to the piece. As a disclaimer — we aren’t experts, only fans offering possible interpretations.

The future is an uncertain thing that we all must face. We all must decide what our dreams and our aspirations are — and then walk the paths that lead us to them. It can all be so daunting and scary. What if we made the wrong choice? What if we don’t reach our goals? These are all concerns we might experience as we head into the future, into the unknown. Yet we all must remember to take in a deep breath and calm our mind and body. Though the future is unknown, there is a sense of calming beauty to it all. We are finally adults who are able to forge our own course, to choose what and who we become. Lacey Patrick’s photo “Snake River Canyon” captures this calming beauty perfectly. Like the river, we must all forge ahead towards the horizon, twisting and turning around the obstacles and fears of what we cannot see in order to get somewhere, wherever that may be.
