The Zeitgeist Chronicle: June 12th-June18th

This week: the Warriors win the NBA championship, Jeff Sessions sorta testifies, and the Mayweather vs. McGregor fight.

Welcome to the Zeitgeist Chronicle. Each edition of The Zeitgeist Chronicle will catch you up on the past week’s most culturally-significant events. If you have a fear of missing out, or you just want to know what’s going on in the world, we’re here for you.

Warriors Win Second Ring In Three Years, Durant Dominates

(Image via: ESPN)

Kevin Durant is an NBA champion. That is no longer an assumption or foregone conclusion; it is now fact. After 10 seasons with OKC and Seattle— some as a lottery team, others as legitimate title contenders — the man who’s now going by “SLIMVP”, has reached the NBA pinnacle. He’s on the board now, with his first ring, and it’s reasonable to expect him to just continue building on that. His teammates got the redemption they wanted, too, and they weren’t quiet about it.

For the Warriors, Monday night’s victory gives them their second title in three years, and they have just about solidified their team as one of the best (single season) teams ever. With their 4–1 victory over LeBron’s Cavaliers, people are asking whether or not these Warriors are good for the NBA. There’s the perpetuation of the “superteam”, and the diminishing of competitiveness, but that’s not Golden State’s responsibility. We still got the drama that makes sports alluring and the Warriors play the right way. Oh , and these Finals were the highest rated in 19 years.

Jeff Sessions Testifies (Kinda)

On Tuesday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions appeared on Capitol Hill, before congress, to address his place in the Trump-Russia investigation. He began by saying the allegations against him for his involvement supposed collusion with Russia, prior to the election, were an “appalling and detestable lie.”

That would end up being the clearest answer he gave in his testimony. When asked about anything involving Trump or Comey, Sessions repeatedly invoked executive privilege — the President’s privilege to keep the contents of his conversations private — to stonewall, the exact thing he said he was not doing.

Sessions’ testimony comes a week following former FBI Director James Comey gave his own congressional testimony, in which he hinted at a possible third, unreported meeting between Jeff Sessions and Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Sessions, of course, recused himself from the Russia investigation in March, but many are questioning the degree, as he appears to have played a role in firing James Comey.

Mayweather vs. McGregor: The Money Fight

There’s a long list of reasons why a Floyd Mayweather versus Conor McGregor fight would’ve never seen the light of day, despite the build up. Ego, for one. The fact that Floyd is a 49–0 lifelong boxer (who’s currently retired) and McGregor is a MMA fighter, another. But of course, none of those things compare to the undefeated force that is Capitalism. Money makes the world go ‘round, as they say.

So, yeah. Vegas. August 26th. We’re getting a Mayweather vs. McGregor fight. Actually, we shouldn’t call this a fight, because it’s a boxing match, not a fight. If this was a no holds barred fight, Conor McGregor — the first man to hold two UFC belts at the same time, and the UFC’s biggest, money-making star — would win. But it’s not, and Floyd is favored to win. That being said, Conor McGregor has nothing to lose, which makes him dangerous.
