Entrepreneurship is one sphere that has grown by leaps and bounds in the past few years, especially in India. Traditionally, Indians lean towards financial security and so businesses were earlier limited to families that were already in business or groups of the society that were rich enough to take the risk. The rise of Indian businesses, big and small is a relatively new and welcome change. Today, Indian businesses are rightly taking over the world and Indian entrepreneurs are making waves too. However, one thing that still needs to change is the presence of women in entrepreneurship.

The number of Indian women entrepreneurs, especially those in big businesses, is still very low. Women entrepreneurs in India are also restricted to certain areas, like food and fashion businesses only. However, now is the time to encourage more and more women to take up entrepreneurship and to pursue their dreams.

Here are 3 reasons why we should encourage more women to take up entrepreneurship:

The economic sphere is conducive to the growth of new businesses:
Today, new businesses are thriving in India because more and more people want to support homegrown, small brands. Customers now care about the business story, the brand identity and the product more than ever before. They make conscious purchases and make these purchases frequently. With a positive increase in consumerism and in purchasing power, market demand for newer products is high. Additionally, a lot of consumers also prefer women-led businesses and want to support them.

Government perks and schemes:
The government is also encouraging small businesses and startups now. With several programmes and schemes implemented to support upcoming businesses, the government is easing the burden of entrepreneurs. There are also several government campaigns that aim to award young entrepreneurs in order to motivate other Indians to take up business. There are also special schemes implemented for women, by women development cells and organizations. Today, it is imperative to encourage more and more women to take up entrepreneurship because the situations are conducive to their growth as leaders.

Change in societal norms:
Earlier a lot of women couldn’t work because they were restricted to their homes. They had familial obligations that prevented them from going out to work. But slowly, societal norms are changing and more women are seeking financial independence. Women are the largest untapped resource in the Indian economy and encouraging them to become entrepreneurs will benefit them as well as the economy.

While the social scenario is changing, so is the digital scenario. Since more and more businesses are now going online, women can earn money from home. What’s even better is that women who dream of running their own business can now do so from the comfort of their home. All they need is their skills and an internet connection. With apps like Shop101, women can become entrepreneurs, starting an online reselling business and earn online, while sitting at home.

It’s time to encourage women to pursue their dreams, to fulfill their potential and to utilize their talent, for their own growth.
