Rakshabandhan is one of the loved and one of the celebrated festivals in India. Traditionally, sisters tie rakhis on their brother’s hands and the brother gifts his sister something. The brother then vows to protect his sister forever and the rakhi that is tied is symbolic of the bond, the bond that protects them both and keeps them together. Over the years, the celebration of Rakhi has changed but the sentiment has stayed the same. Today, in a lot of households, rakhis are tied on the hands of babies, a lot of sisters tie rakhis on each other’s hands too, and the festival has evolved with the times, but it still remains one of the most loved festivals in India.

Every year, during Rakshabandhan, many rakhis are produced. But in recent times, with climate change becoming an important issue, the waste generated by rakhis has become a topic of discussion. In metro cities and in households where the festival was celebrated with a lot of pomp, there is a lot of waste that is generated.
