* Part 1: Quran, the Book of Allah, the Exalted, for treating illness and disease; Quranic verses of healing used by Prophet Muhammad, may peace be upon him

Introduction

The Quran is the Word/Speech of Allah جالا جلاله and was revealed to the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم. Muslims believe that the Quran can treat physical and spiritual diseases. People may suffer from mild or severe diseases, and every disease has a cure. In Islam, illness is considered a test from Allah جالا جلاله. In chapter 17 of the Holy Quran (Surah Isra — the Night Journey), verse 82, Allah جالا جلاله says:

The Holy Quran

Verses Detailing Cure for Diseases

Yusuff and team (2019) attempted to enquire the Quran verses detailing cure for diseases. Allah جالا جلاله says in chapter 10 of the Quran (Surah Yunus — Prophet Jonah), verse 57:

Further, in Sura chapter 41 of the Quran (Surah Fussilat — Explained in Detail), verse 44, Allah جالا جلاله says:

Healing with the Quran can be miraculous and even diseases without a cure can be healed by the permission of Allah جالا جلاله (Yusuff et. al., 2019). A person who is afflicted with a disease prays to Allah جالا جلاله for a cure.

One must attempt to treat illness with complete sincerity of faith and surrender to the Will of Allah جالا جلاله. Disease is considered as a test from Allah جالا جلاله for mankind to return to Him. Scientists maintain that reciting the verses of the Quran calm the heart and promote sound healing. The Quran shields a person who recites it. Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم used to ask Ayesha رضي الله أنها, his wife, to read chapter 113 (Surah Al Falaq — The Dawn) and chapter 114 (Sura An Nas — the Mankind) when he was in pain (Yusuff et. al., 2019).

Chapter 1 of the Quran (Surah Al Fatihah — The Opener) is the chapter of healing. The companions of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم treated a bedouin who was stung by a scorpion by reciting Surah Al Fatihah. Moreover, Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم advised to seek treatment from the Quran and honey. In Islamic medicine, healing is sought by reading the verses of the Quran, praying to Allah جالا جلاله, and remembering Him. Verses of the Quran can be read over a sick person and blown on drinking water. This water, when drunk by the sick person relieves distress (Yusuff et. al., 2019). Unlike modern forms of medicine, healing by the Quran is purely based on faith in the healing from Allah جالا جلاله for physical, mental, and spiritual ailments. Reading, listening, and learning the Quran acts as a form of healing for the body and the soul.
