The tragic flooding in several states in Nigeria has had a ripple effect on the lives of the victims and the country at large. Due to the crisis, many families have been displaced and many children have been orphaned. A report by the Global Citizen stated that over 1.4 million people have been displaced, more than 90,000 homes have been destroyed, and about 500 people have died in one of the worst floodings Nigeria has seen in a decade.

The flooding poses a humanitarian crisis to its many victims whose lives will never be the same again. These survivors currently need food, shelter, clothing and health care while they try to get back on their feet.

Here are 10 Nonprofits that are playing a part in assisting the flood victims through these rough times. Each nonprofit has an avenue to receive support and donations.

However, we encourage you to do your due diligence before making any donations.

The Healing Hands Health Society is a faith-based nonprofit organization involved in providing free healthcare, health education, and disaster relief in various parts of the world. The organization aims to provide food and medical services to over 1000 people camped at ICS Oleh, Kogi State.

The Healing Hands Health Society also distributed mosquito nets to nursing mothers at the IDP camp in Oleh and Ozoro, Delta State.

In partnership with Oral Health Programs USA, and New Wave Nigeria, the nonprofit also undertook a Dental Outreach at the IDP camp at Oleh. It additionally distributed books from author Modupe Adeyemo.

The program to feed and cater to the needs of the survivors is still ongoing.

2. Crescent Kids
Location of Beneficiaries: Kogi State

Crescent Kids Team

Crescent Kids is a nonprofit that supports children with Sickle Cell Anemia(SCA) and Thalassemia through research and fundraising. Sickle Cell Anemia is a life-threatening and long-term genetic blood condition that is majorly triggered by cold temperatures, water infections, stress, and many other factors.

Currently, Crescent Kids is running an emergency fund for children affected by the flood in Kogi State, especially those living with SCD. Kogi State has the highest number of children living with SCD and this means that there is a higher proneness to crises. The flooding situation right now is a major trigger for kids with this condition.

Crescent Kids are working with a Sickle Cell charity on the ground in Lokoja to provide relief materials to these children and families. Their immediate needs are food supplies, mosquito nets, malaria drugs, water supply, and clothes (many have lost all of their clothes in the flood water).

From the 4th to the 6th of November, Sesor visited IDP Camps in Anambra State (Atani in Mmiata Anam), and Delta State (Oneh Primary School, Cable Point and Oleh) and was able to deliver relief materials to these camps for over 300 people.

They are currently raising funds for displaced children at Oxbow Lake IDP Camp, Bayelsa State. The relief materials urgently needed are shelter, food, water, medicines, cooking sets, blankets, sanitary items, and floormats.

6. Donate NG
Location of Beneficiaries: Rivers State

The communities in Egbema Rivers State have been ghastly affected by floods, with people losing their homes and no plans in sight for rescue. Based on the need assessment Donate NG carried out, it was discovered that there is currently a shortage of supplies at the IDP camps within that Local Government Area. The most vulnerable groups at the moment include women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. These groups are open to emergency relief supplies (food, shelter, medicine, clothes, etc.).

The activities include First Aid, Emergency Preparedness and Response, and Disaster Risk Reduction. It responds anywhere in the country in times of emergency through its trained volunteers.

Those affected by the flood are the target beneficiaries of the organization’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF). Vulnerable people such as children, the aged, women, displaced persons, and families need this support the most. In collaboration with IFRC Africa, they aim to provide temporary shelter, water, and sanitation to affected persons.

8. United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Nigeria
Locations of Beneficiaries
: Jigawa, Bayelsa, Niger, and Kaduna

UNICEF, the core UN agency for children’s rights globally, has supported the Nigerian government’s response to the floods in Jigawa, Niger, and Kaduna States. They have also provided cash assistance, distribution of Cholera kits, government-led mobile health teams, temporary learning centers, and learning kits for children living in IDP camps.

These children lack basic amenities and face health hazards like water-borne illnesses and they are at risk of experiencing gender-based violence. The closest thing to education that the children at the Ringim Junior Arabic IDP camp in Jigawa State get is an English lesson they listen to, through a transistor radio. To ensure that learning is not disrupted, UNICEF has provided solar-powered transistor radios to IDP camps in Jigawa State.

With more funding, UNICEF plans to expand its efforts in Bayelsa by providing life-saving medical supplies, chlorinated water, sanitation supplies, and other essential commodities, in an effort to mitigate the devastating effects of the floods and support for the prevention and treatment of sexual and gender-based violence.

9. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA)
Locations of Beneficiaries: Adamawa, Yobe, and Borno

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) mobilizes and coordinates humanitarian assistance to people in need worldwide. They are raising funds to support people affected by the floods across Nigeria. Now, as floodwaters recede, affected people have started returning to what is left of their homes and they will need cash assistance, seeds, fishing and farming tools, and other support to restore their lost assets and livelihoods.

10. United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)

Locations of Beneficiaries: Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe

Since the outbreak of the flood in Nigeria, the UNHCR, and its partners have been providing shelter and essential aid to thousands of families, including 14,900 tarpaulin sheets and 550 kits with basic household items.

According to UN estimates, hundreds of lives have been lost, over 1.3 million persons have been displaced, and more than 2.8 million people have been impacted, as farmlands and infrastructure have been submerged.
In Taraba State, heavy rain has cut off affected communities in Baissa town from humanitarian assistance. This is a major concern for the organization and many others.
Currently, the UNHCR’s humanitarian operations in West Africa are dangerously and chronically underfunded. With less than two months left in the year, the global organization has received 39 percent of the funds needed for its 2022 Nigerian operations.

UNHCR is appealing to all donors for urgent support for its life-saving work in Nigeria. Click here to donate.
