Replacing “Melancholy and Infinite Sadness Thursdays” with “Existential Dread Thursdays”!

Hi everyone,

It was brought up during the exit interviews from the last round of layoffs that our Thursday Theme: Melancholy and Infinite Sadness might have been a bit too macabre. That’s what I’m told, at least… but I’m suspicious— you know how layoffs go. People get bitter and retaliate through different means. Between the requests for tissues and pillows under the desks and the frequent use of the phrases “went home sobbing” “returned the next day still sobbing” and “sobbing is who I am now” in our exit questionnaire, I honestly think something was up and we were lucky to toss out a few bad apples.

Anyway, ignoring the fact that we promote live music and events and the previous Thursday Theme relates directly to my favorite band from the 1990's (later stuff is shit), it seems like a good time for a fresh start, I guess.

The leadership team put our heads together to bring you a new Thursday Theme theme. A bit of background…We were looking for something that hit a few marks:

  • Open-ended, brings in multiple interpretations.
  • Feels active, but not exhausting, and again, open enough for someone to interpret it with passivity.
  • Inclusive, encourages diverse participation.
  • Really nails our core values and dedication to experimental music.

So without further ado, I’m happy to announce our new weekly Thursday theme: EXISTENTIAL DREAD THURSDAYS.

Outfits are encouraged — I know I’ll be wearing the same unwashed black t-shirt and pair of sweatpants every Thursday going forward! Fun! Here are some examples of what you can expect going forward.

Deconstructed Drinks
The bartender will still come (we love Sven!), but per the theme, he’ll be laying on the floor, devaluing his self-worth and overthinking himself into paralysis, which means you get to mix your own concoctions! My go-to: a full glass of vodka with a single, sinking cherry. No ice.

Hot Food/Cold Food Buffet
We’ll be introducing a two-sided food bar, practically mirror images of each other. But! One side will be labeled “What’s The Point Of Anything?” and will feature cold versions of your favorite, because if everything exists, nothing exists, and we are all just tiny specks in the grand scheme of the universe so there’s no point in bothering to cook food. Consume at your own peril, but if you get sick, at least you’ll feel something, AMIRIGHT?

The other side will be “Got Lost In The Void Of Space”, featuring piping hot, crispy favorites scorched within an inch of life by some amazing, high demand chefs instructed to stare into the endless abyss of the night until their kitchens nearly catch fire. Who doesn’t love a good crunch to their food?

Cubist Decor
We asked the art department to consider the feeling of existential dread, mixed with being overwhelmed by choice and a dash of nihilism because people will see whatever they want to see no matter what you do — which means some great abstract shapes cut from .99 Store construction paper and the recycling bin!

Original Music
Finally, we fired the DJ (who was kind of expensive) and hired a new guy. He’s a freshman at Bismarck Community College, and comes really cheap (He’s my nephew). He’ll be mixing some single-instrument instrumental music he described as “atonal and textural,” which will really set the mood, I think. I can’t wait to see how the dance floor really opens up with our new DJ!

We think these happy hours will be the best yet! As always, invite friends and artist contacts, if you’ve been able to make any in spite of your crippling social anxiety. I sat next to a guy on the bus this morning, he had a great t-shirt and if I ever see him again, you know I’ll be telling him how much I appreciated his t-shirt and quickly passing along the invite!

Also, no deadlines or meetings on Thursdays going forward. You’re welcome!

Best,
Edith
