Traditional Statue and Atrium

The ‘traditional’ Japanese statue Maneki-Neko greets visitors coming to Gateway Ekamai shopping mall from the Skytrain. Maneki-Neko is a figurine depicting a cat with its paw raised that is believed to bring good luck. The central atrium is decorated with Japanese lanterns, replica cherry trees, and cranes. Meanwhile, origami birds also float around in the central atrium creating a mesmerizing sight.

Express Shopping at Gateway Ekamai

Gateway Ekamai Mall in Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (Bangkok) has a mix of affordable restaurants, clothes stores, health and beauty shops, an edutainment center, a large IT zone, and a 24-hour supermarket. A skywalk directly links this Japanese-style mall with the Ekamai BTS Skytrain Station.

A giant lucky cat stands in front of the mall entrance. Inside, origami birds float up high in its central atrium. At the same time, replica cherry trees, lanterns, and daruma dolls (Japanese talisman of good luck) serve as decor in various parts of the mall.

The Japanese theme can be seen throughout the selection of restaurants on offer. The ground floor offers the usual fare, such as Subway, KFC, Swensen’s, and the customary Thai food court. Its floor “M” offers a wide range of Japanese restaurants and cafes, including Kyo Roll En, Ramen Kourakuen, Nagoya Tokyo Izakaya, Hinaya, and Chabuton.

Gateway Ekamai Mall’s 2nd floor has beauty salons offering facials, hair, and waxing services, along with the Boots and Watsons pharmacies. The 3rd floor consists of independent boutiques selling children’s and women’s clothing.

Japanese Lifestyle at Gateway Ekamai

The mall comprises hundreds of Japanese and other Asian restaurants with many other businesses. With direct access right out of the Skytrain, it’s easy to get here. The choice of reasonably inexpensive restaurants is a big draw for the work and post-work crowd.

Gateway Ekamai opened in July 2012 at the Ekamai junction on Sukhumvit Road. It’s right at the Skytrain station and has a bridge linking the station right to the Mezzanine floor. The mall calls itself a “Japanese Lifestyle Mall,” and indeed, when you enter the mall from the train station, all the restaurant concepts, along with the decorations, are very Japanese.

Some brands are new to Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (Bangkok). However, the Japanese theme soon wears off as you make your way up or down, and by the time you get to the IT area on the top floor, the brands are more Korean than Japanese.
