Celebrating Chinese New Year in Thailand

Just like the rest of the world celebrates New Year’s Day on 1st January, the Chinese New Year is calculated using a lunar calendar 🥳 As it marks the first day of the lunar year and the beginning of the spring, it is believed to bring good luck and prosperity for the new year. Chinese businesses in Thailand will often close for the holiday, and street fairs and markets are set up in Chinatowns across the country.

The day of the Chinese New Year varies each year depending on the Chinese Lunar calendar. It generally falls in January or February. In 2023, the Chinese New Year in Thailand falls on Sunday, January 22 🎉️

How does Thailand Celebrate the Chinese New Year?

Chinese New Year is celebrated with a variety of traditional customs and activities. These vibrant activities showcase lion and dragon dances, parades, fireworks displays, family gatherings, decorations, and lots of traditional foods.

Lion and Dragon Dances

The lion and dragon dances are essential to Chinese New Year celebrations. It is a form of a traditional Chinese dance performed by a team of dancers wearing lion costumes 🎉️ They mimic the movements of a lion and often perform acrobatic stunts and tricks.

Both lion and dragon dances are typically performed at Chinese temples, in Chinese communities, and in the main tourist areas during Chinese New Year 🥳 The performances are colorful, loud, and lively events that are fun to watch and are a great way to experience Chinese culture and traditions. As I know, the lion dance is believed to bring good luck and prosperity to the community, so don’t miss it!

Parades

Many towns and cities in Thailand will have parades to mark the start of the new year, often featuring colorful floats and traditional performers 🎉️ These parades often feature lion and dragon dances, as well as other traditional Chinese performances such as martial arts, acrobatics, and music.

Firework Displays

Firework displays are a popular feature and my favorite among the Chinese New Year celebrations 🥳 People believed in warding off evil spirits and bringing good luck for the new year through fireworks.

The displays are performed on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. You will see a wide variety of fireworks, including traditional firecrackers, sparklers, and large aerial displays 🎉️ So, it is a great way to experience the traditional Chinese culture and traditions, and they are usually colorful and exciting events to watch.

Gather For The Family Feast

Family gatherings and meals are an important tradition during the Chinese New Year. Eve dinner is considered the most important meal of the year, and families often travel long distances to be together. 🎉️ The meal typically includes traditional Chinese dishes such as dumplings, fish, and noodles, which are believed to bring good luck and prosperity in the new year.

During the meal, the family members often exchange greetings and wishes for the new year and have a toast with their favorite drink 🥳 Family members also take this time to catch up with each other, share stories, and bond. It’s also a time for the children to receive red envelopes filled with money as a gift from their family members 🎉️

Traditional Foods

Traditional Chinese New Year foods are exciting to enjoy. They have different meanings, which are believed to bring good luck, prosperity, and longevity 🎉️ Some of the most common foods served during Chinese New Year include:

Additionally, families will often prepare unique dishes for the Chinese New Year’s Eve dinner. Such as Peking duck, sweet and sour pork, and hot pot, which is enjoyed by all family members 🥳 The excellent news is that all the visitors also have the chance to engage with this yummy moment during the Chinese New Year in Thailand.

Cleaning

Many people in Thailand will also clean their homes thoroughly before the new year to sweep away any bad luck from the past year and make way for good luck in the new year 🎉️ In addition to cleaning the house; many families will also do laundry and buy new clothes before the New Year. It is believed that wearing new clothes on New Year’s Day will bring good luck for the year ahead.

Special Decorations

Chinese New Year is a time to enjoy special decorations 🥳 Many families will decorate their homes to celebrate the occasion. You will see the following:

I highly recommend watching these colorful, vibrant decorations will surely give you an unforgettable experience during Chinese New Year 🎉️
