Local businesses are the foundation of strong local communities, towns, and cities. Building strong towns, instead of big cities should be the right approach. Also, kids do not leave such places to prosper elsewhere.

Today’s approach is opposite, which is building housing, markets, roads at scale. This approach favours the few big businesses, with access to capital and influence. DLF in Gurgaon is one example. Charles Marohn, author of Strong Towns believes in the bottom-up revolution. It aims to rectify the problem of growth without the prosperity.

He shared a blueprint of building such communities, towns and businesses. ‘Breaking out of the Resource Trap’ is a free online book. Its focus is…

  • How the traditional approach to community development differs from the prevailing modern approach.
  • How to retain capital in your community and create more opportunities for your citizens to provide for each other’s needs and wants locally.
  • How to make space for local entrepreneurs to experiment and thrive.
  • What kind of investments in your public realm best support the goal of a community that will grow in wealth and resilience over time.
