Quick snapshot:

  • Delhi has less than 10,000.
  • Tokyo has 34,000.
  • Hongkong has 27,000.
  • Paris has 20,000.
  • Moscow has 18,000.
  • Beijing and Shanghai have 16,000.

Why are the numbers low?

  • Most trains have 6 cars. Fewer have 8 cars per train. It should be 11 cars per train. As a result there is shortage of 1600 cars.
  • Less frequent trains aren’t good. Current wait time is more than 2 minutes. It should come down to 1.5 minutes. It will increase frequency.
  • Fewer stations limit ridership. Moscow has 245 stations in city centre with just 50 kms of line. Entire Delhi Metro with more than 300 kms has just 229 stations.

How does it impact Delhi-NCR?

  • Traffic on road does not reduce, as fewer people use Delhi Metro.
  • Bad air quality is an indirect consequence, as vehicles pollute more.
  • Low ridership raises the fare, which makes it unaffordable.
