Japanese retailers love Delhi NCR. First Moji, now Uniqlo is coming to the town.

Uniqlo announced India’s entry. It will set up its first store in Delhi in 2019.

A brief history:

  • Uniqlo started in 1984. It sells casual clothes.
  • Zara and H&M are its competitors, who sell trendy clothing and jewelry.
  • It has 1089 stores worldwide.
  • It made a profit of $1.57 bn on sales of $16.87 bn.
  • Fast Retailing Co. is its holding company. Its other brands are GU, Theory, Comptoir des Cotonniers, Princesse tam.tam, and J Brand
  • It aims to become world’s largest fashion retailer.

What does it mean?

  • High demand for fast fashion; India’s fashion retail market is worth $70 bn .
  • Muji, another Japanese retail major has opened four stores in India ( 2 in Delhi-NCR).
  • Positive signs for local garment manufacturers; as these brands will source from local manufacturers.
  • Intense competition between fashion brands to get customers.
