Mcdonald’s shut down its business in Iceland. It could not compete with Tommi’s Burger Joint in Iceland. Starbucks could not compete with small businesses in Australia.

Tommi worked in kitchens for seven years. He went to USA, the Mecca of restaurants. He studied hospitality. After returning to Iceland, he started Tommi’s Hamburger. Within a week of the launch Tommi’s Burger Joint saw a footfall of more than 1000. He sold the business to start other ventures. In 2004 he started Tommi’s Burger Joint. It competed with McDonald’s, which shut down in 2009.

Tommi believes in slow and steady growth. He said in an interview, “The most difficult thing to fulfil is consistency. When you come in, your burger should be exactly like the one you had the last time. It’s better to have a bad burger all the time and let people get used to it, than to have a good burger one day and a bad burger the next day. Consistency is the name of the game. It’s difficult, especially when you cook to order.”

Tommi’s Burger Joint is now in more than 20 locations, in more than 6 countries. His advice to small businesses is to put all the eggs in one basket, and watch the basket. He suggests it is not enough to something well, unless one likes doing it.
