Qualcomm Targets Historic Intel Takeover in $90 Billion AI-Driven Deal.

Qualcomm has approached Intel about a potential takeover in what could be one of the largest tech deals ever. Intel, once valued at over $290 billion, has seen its market value drop to $90 billion amid significant challenges. Qualcomm’s bid, if successful, would expand its chip business and help both companies capitalize on the AI boom. However, the deal faces potential antitrust scrutiny and the possibility of Intel divesting assets. A successful acquisition would surpass Microsoft’s $69 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard, making it the largest tech acquisition in history.

Forget AI Copilots, AI-powered agents are the game changers.

Tech giants like Microsoft, Salesforce, and Workday are advancing beyond AI copilots to a new generation of AI-powered “agents.” These agents, designed to take actions on behalf of users, promise greater automation and productivity gains for businesses. While AI agents hold potential for more complex tasks, such as automating customer service, their real impact on software company revenues remains uncertain. Companies are experimenting with new pricing models, including usage-based and outcome-based fees, to monetize this technology, but the long-term success and disruption remain to be seen.

But what is the difference between the two?

1. AI Copilots: These are assistive tools designed to provide users with recommendations, insights, or help based on inputs. They act as “advisors,” offering suggestions and supporting users by automating smaller tasks, such as summarizing information, drafting content, or guiding decision-making. Copilots are still largely reliant on human input to take action, meaning the user remains in control and decides when to apply the copilot’s suggestions.

2. AI-Powered Agents: These take AI assistance further by “acting” on behalf of the user. Agents can autonomously execute tasks, interact with other systems via APIs, and complete workflows without needing constant human oversight. They are capable of making decisions and performing actions, like automating customer support or managing routine tasks, such as filling expense reports. Agents aim to increase automation by reducing the need for human intervention.

In short, copilots assist and enhance user workflows, while agents take more proactive actions and can operate independently to a greater extent.

Which States are Regulating AI?

As the 2024 election approaches, at least 26 states are moving to regulate the use of generative AI in political campaigns, with 19 already passing laws and 7 considering bills. The fragmented legal landscape highlights growing concerns over AI’s potential to mislead or disenfranchise voters. High-profile cases, such as AI-generated robocalls and deceptive ads, have raised alarms, while federal regulation remains minimal, leaving much of the enforcement to state-level initiatives.
