Classless Act

Congresswoman Sanchez is just being as classy as she can.

We had the annual Congressional Baseball Game last week. You know the game in the spirit of camaraderie, fun, and so on. You know the game. It is one of the few times that Congressional leaders get together and have fun without having to give some speech about how the other side is bad. This is the one time we can have the children watch and say, “even these guys can get along.”

That is until Congresswoman Sanchez made sure that wasn’t the case. Her team decided on a pinch runner as she got on first base. As she walked back to her dugout, passing the opposing bench, Congresswoman Sanchez flipped the bird. It seemed she couldn’t control her childish urges and decided to flip the bird, supposedly to the opposition. Now is that all that bad? On the surface, it is not. Was the opposing side surprised or mad? Probably not.

But if I do remember, she is an elected official who is to represent her constituents. Most of us expect our elected officials to be held to a higher standard. Or at least the ones from the opposite party, the ones within our party we turn that blind eye to. Personally, I don’t care what party she is from. I think it was classless, to say the least. I do believe this was a charity game to raise money for the Boys and Girls Club in DC. Hmm, classy.

Some may not know this, but she has been a member of both parties, with which I have no beef. I have no beef what party she belongs to. I have a beef that this is probably the only time I would want my grandchildren to watch an elected official in today’s time based on their past conduct. Moving along, let me pull some more of this back.

There was a point in my military career when I had advanced to a certain level. During this time, the United States Military was the most trusted organization in America by the polls. It was around 85%. Also, during this time, guess what organization was at the bottom? Yep, you guessed it, Congress. Now with that said, countless other senior leaders and I had to sit and watch a taped video brief from none other than Congresswoman Sanchez on the conduct in the military. It was completely hypocritical, juvenile, and lacked any sincerity to it all.

I took it as a five-year-old telling the Super Bowl Champs how to run their offense. Now I got it. Congress holds the purse strings to the military. Ok, so it was like the five-year-old with Daddy’s money telling the Super Bowl Champs how to run their offense. Completely out of touch with reality, to say the least. A lot of ivory tower concepts in that brief and so on.

Does flipping the bird, being out of touch, and being very condescending have anything to do with each other? No, not really. I do find it ironic that someone who lacks class and understanding when scolding military leaders from a videotape also publicly lacks class when little eyes are watching.

When she was asked about it, originally, someone from the opposition dugout supposedly said a misogynistic remark. Ok, I understand that could strike a nerve, but aren’t we at a fundraiser? Politicians are used to having rude things verbally hurled at them, right? The next day, the remark was then said to be from a spectator. Pretty much trying to justify her emotional disdain. Either way is bad, but, at a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club, I don’t see how flipping the bird is appropriate from those that lecture us on how to be professional.

Now she is not the only legislator that has resorted to the middle finger tactic. State Rep Dominic LeRiccia did it in Georgia’s House class photo. He is from the opposite party of Sanchez. Over a dozen years ago, Senator Jim Bunning also gave the middle finger to a journalist. He is also from the opposing party as Sanchez. All three are wrong for doing it while holding a prestigious office in our land. Both sides are wrong, not just the side I don’t like.

So, Congresswoman Sanchez just followed the trend set before her. But that doesn’t excuse her actions.

I would suggest since children were watching that, Congresswoman Sanchez focuses on playing baseball or legislation and keep those obscene finger gestures out of her repertoire. Maybe she should match the contributions raised that night as an offer of being wrong. I am pretty sure that would serve her constituents far better. I think it would serve the charity event far better. I know it would serve America far better.
