Even though the educational requirements for game development vary, many employers prefer to hire individuals with a degree in something related to programming or computer science. This ensures that they have the necessary skills and experience to work in the field.

Video Games

One way to gain hands-on experience with game development is by developing your own games. This can be a powerful tool for aspiring developers.

Many roles in video game development require some knowledge in the field of game development. This is often necessary if you are a skilled developer and want to know what kind of games would appeal to you.

Programming Skills

Even if you don’t work in game programming or coding, having a basic knowledge of programming can be helpful for someone who is involved in game development.

Some good resources to begin with is Udacity, Pluralsight, or even just YouTube! There’s a lot of tutorials and published content that make learning so easy.

Teamwork

If you are a game developer, then you need to know how to become a good team member. In order to succeed in this field, you need to develop skills in communication, collaboration, and management.

A fun way to involve yourself in team work is by involving a friend in a game development project. Pair programming is one of the best ways to learn faster too — you’ll have someone to give you their ideas or perspective of a particular problem.

Story telling

Even if it’s simple, most video games have a good story. Having this knowledge will help you become a better game developer. One of my favorite games is Grand Theft Auto 5. It’s has massive maps, missions, and side gigs — but they all have a story behind it. These missions trigger my curiosity because the outcome might be different depending on the actions I take.
