It started as a Tik Tok Trend. “Have you ever been punched in your m — fing face,” the lyrics begin, “What you say? Oh you haven’t, alright wait.” The text on the screen read, “Have you ever been overpowered by your brother and his best friend?” She drops the phone on the ground and steps over the camera before it cuts to a black screen saying, “Keep your laws off our bodies.”

Tik Tok trends have been at the forefront of discourse for Gen-Z and millennial women for months. The song Vent by Baby Keem featuring Kendrick Lamar as their backdrop.

Women lip-sync to the song and put text on the screen highlighting their stories of abuse. Most of these stories highlight why they’ve needed abortions. They put their worst traumas on display to characterize the realities of abortion stories. Why the right to abortion is really a right to their own lives.

Spend a minute or two in the comments, on Twitter or simply engaged with the world around us and you’ll see these stories don’t work. It doesn’t matter how many stories of trauma women share, they’re unable to truly shake the foundation of “pro-life” beliefs.

Because they’re not and have never been about women.

Pro-lifers get abortions…
