On July 14th, 2024 a Youtuber named D’Angelo Wallace, has done what no Youtuber has ever dared. He took on one of the platform's most beloved behemoths: Cody Ko.
Cody Ko has been a prominent figure in the online commentary space for over a decade, after getting his start on Vine. Still, his reputation hasn’t been as squeaky clean as his counterparts.
The internet has taken another man’s stance against Cody Ko, more seriously than his victim’s.
One of his first major controversies involved his use of the N-word, in his Vines. At the time, racism was not new to Vine. The platform thrived on it. Much of the humour, even from Black creators, relied heavily on stereotypes and racialized humour. Cody apologized for this on his Patreon, and his audience largely forgave it. Which is par for the course.
Race-related controversy has never been quite that damaging to a white person’s career. And since most popular white creators have some form of racism scandal, it’s not a shocking controversy to have.
