Accountability Was Never The Enemy

Many of us believe that accountability is about bringing the bad guys to justice. As a result, we’ve missed what genuine accountability is. Allow me to explain.

What’s the emotional undercurrent driving your decisions?

Every decision we make has an emotional undercurrent. Our emotional undercurrent is the invisible string moving us to do what we do. Most of us never stop to address what our emotional undercurrent is and how it impacts decision-making.

Because your feelings are written all over your decisions, your emotional undercurrent affects how fast you can move forward. Where are you at?

In genuine accountability, we do not deny or suppress our feelings. We lead with vulnerability first.

If openly sharing where you’re at is difficult for you, what do you need right now to lead with more transparency?

Are you committed to empowering every element on deck?

Your ship (relationships, business, finances, etc.) has many elements interacting with you.

In genuine accountability, we never take the elements for granted. Instead, we seek to understand how the emotional undercurrent of every element on deck (including yourself) affects the ship and its trajectory.

Are you committed to tapping into your emotional undercurrent to understand how it impacts decision-making? Based on your answer… Where do you want to be?

In genuine accountability, we determine a bold course of action that empowers every element on deck. There is no finger-pointing, blaming, or shaming in any form. Genuine accountability uncovers blind spots with the intent to empower.

Without an emotionally intelligent accountability partner showing you how to resolve your blind spots, how would you know the emotional undercurrent driving your decisions?

Are you tapping into the right resources?

Tapping into the right resources means that you are genuinely committed to steering your ship to a good port. No one does it alone. Who’s going to help get you there?

Genuine commitment incorporates emotionally intelligent accountability; there’s no room for disempowering strategies. Genuine accountability boldly holds us to the highest Emotional Intelligence standard.

Are you the captain of your ship?

Jarrett Adams was 17 years old when he was wrongfully convicted for a crime he didn’t commit and sentenced to 28 years in prison.

After about 18 months in prison, Adams had a genuine accountability conversation that changed his life. A cellmate said, ”Look, you get up every day, and you go out and play chess and basketball. You don’t act innocent. Innocent people are in the law library.”

The young man has since become a lawyer who addresses what genuine accountability is. He also offers a bold course of action that empowers.

What do you need right now to feel empowered?

We are all battling something. In the heat of the battle, we might find it difficult to be objective about where we’re at. That is why we can’t be accountable by ourselves because we’re submerged in our personal reality.

Jarrett empowered himself after having a genuine accountability conversation that questioned his level of awareness and commitment to set himself free. From that conversation, he emotionally understood that accountability was never the enemy.

  • Genuine accountability leads with vulnerability first. Where are you at?
  • What’s the emotional undercurrent driving your decisions? Your emotional undercurrent shows what you need to feel empowered.
  • Are you committed to steering your ship to a good port? Where do you want to be?
  • Genuine accountability uncovers blind spots with the intent to empower. Are you tapping into the right resources?
  • Who’s going to help you get there? The most successful people I know have a highly trained crew on deck. That crew learns to apply a profoundly practical emotionally intelligent process that not only challenges their perspective (aka blind spots) but also shows them how to play a bigger game.
