If money is the almighty goal for you, have the guts to say the exact number that would satisfy your business hunger. If you can’t come up with a number, be willing to ask yourself what it is you truly want.

Choosing a strategic goal can be like opening the fridge when we’re hungry. You have a choice. You can bite off more than you can chew and try to track many KPIs. Or you can pause and feel into what would genuinely satisfy your business hunger. What can you stomach?

Is money the almighty goal for you?

Many business owners have a big appetite for money. How much money? When asked to say the exact number, they tend to retreat. Prompted more, we hear, “As much money as possible.” Let me be bold. If money is the almighty goal for you, have the guts to say the exact number that would satisfy your business hunger. If you can’t come up with a number, be willing to ask yourself what it is you truly want.

What would hit the spot for you?

Here’s something I’d like you to consider. A strategic goal that is not emotionally intelligent will always come in short. To be satisfied, we need to tie our strategy to the feeling we’re looking to experience. So let me ask you. How would you know your business hunger is satisfied? Would it be when sales jumped 10% year-over-year? What that be enough for you for the rest of your life? If you said no, you’re most likely looking for a feeling. Search your heart. What drives you to do what you do? Name the feeling.

Who’s holding you accountable to be true to yourself?

I was working with a client who builds companies up for a living. They came to see me because they felt stuck in a rut. No matter how much money they made as a senior advisor, they felt like there was nothing that could satisfy their business hunger. They had lost their passion and were depressed.

In a few sessions, my client understood that creativity was more than one aspect of their life. It was at the very center of everything they do. That hunger would never be satisfied by more money. They felt the happiest when they were being creative. It was like a light bulb went on for them. At once, they realigned their business strategy to suit their creative needs. As a result, they said their passion for business had returned. With that in mind

Let’s go back to our fridge analogy. If you are hungry for a juicy steak, don’t settle for chopped liver. If the fridge feels empty, get the resources you need. The world is your oyster. Choose a strategic goal that would satisfy your business hunger.

Choose the strategic goal that hits the spot.

Here are some questions to discover where your business hunger lies:

  1. What drives you to do what you do? Name the feeling.
  2. What are you repeatedly validating? Name the feeling.
  3. Are these two feelings the same? Why not?
  4. Pick the one you want to experience. What is the strategic goal that would allow you to express that feeling?
  5. Who is holding you accountable to be true to yourself while giving your clients what they want?
