For most of her life, Jenna Carmichael, of Queens, New York, has kept her mouth closed and not only observed but also endured systemic gender inequalities. In 2012, Carmichael had come to find that a male coworker with an equivalent role at her then place of employment was being paid a higher salary. “Enough is enough, too long in my life have I been passive. Seeing these tired, fruitless Facebook posts and endless Twitter hashtag campaigns leading nowhere gets frustrating. Somebody had to actually put her foot down and take some action,” declared Carmichael. It was absolutely no coincidence that the day had happened to have also been Susan B. Anthony’s birthday. Carmichael took to the stage around 9:00PM at O’Malley’s on a Saturday, and sang a refreshing rendition of ‘Piano Man’ replacing every instance of “man” with “woman.” By the end of the song, most in the pub, in tears, collectively rose and erupted into applause. “I’m so damn proud of my sis’,” stated Davy Carmichael an officer in the Navy as well as Jenna’s brother, who happened to have been in town with quite a bit of time left to serve.
