As Lucius Aurelius made his trip down to the local forum to purchase his weekly requirement of flour, and other dried goods, he noticed something peculiar about the weight of the denarii in his money pouch.
He couldn’t be sure, but it somehow felt lighter than usual.
And even more peculiar, when he arrived at the forum to greet Titus Valerius, a vendor of flour and other dried goods, Valerius had raised prices on a whole host of goods.
“I say good sir, to what do I owe this unwelcome surprise of increased prices?”
Rubbing his thumb and first two fingers together, Valerius replied,
“Sir, I say to thee, I have not increased prices of my own accord.”
“But see now that denarius in your purse. Hath doth not noticed its lack of sufficiency?”
Aurelius jingled the denarii in his money pouch and did indeed notice that they had felt somewhat lighter than usual. Lifting a denarius towards Valerius,
“But see here good sir, do you not see the very face of our Emperor Nero on this denarius? Are you saying that it is today, indeed not worth as much as it was yesterday and all the days of tomorrow?”
