Data is “The Language” of the Digital Age

What is the true nature of data nowadays rather than the lacking “data is the new oil” metaphor?

We are both the producer and consumer of the data. It is in every aspect and every moment of our lives today. It is creating value but also bringing concerns around privacy, security, inequality.

I had shared insights and my ideas about the data economy in my previous story: “The data history: Transforming from a side-product to a rising economy”. But I think the impact is larger than the economy itself. It plays a broader role beyond being an asset, product, or service. When interpreted and used correctly, it turns into a living phenomenon and influencer. It even creates a new layer of sense — not just for people but also interactions between the physical and digital world.

The most famous data metaphor — coined by Clive Humby in 2006 — is “data is the new oil”. As generally admitted by all, oil-metaphor describes the economic value of data and the need for refinement before creating value. But it…
