After gathering a lot of important information with secondary research and guerrilla research, the Artists decided to focus the week on conducting interviews with disaster experts and survivors. Some of the interviews included experts such as a Rubicon representative. Rubicon organizes volunteers and aims to have boots on the ground no more than 24 hours after a disaster. Another interviewee was a hurricane Maria survivor who gave us details of the still precarious situation in some areas of Puerto Rico, along with what she faced before, during and after the hurricane.

During the week, the team felt that we were not being able to efficiently share among us the insights we were individually having; since the Artists had decided to divide research topics, we had to find a way to efficiently share this information with each other. Our solution for this problem was writing our main findings in post-its and clustering them during a meeting. One person would read aloud his/her post-it and the members who had had similar insights would also read theirs aloud and stick them together.

The Artists grouped their insights in clusters

Pink post-its were used for primary research findings and blue ones for secondary research. The main topics we clustered together were:

  • Shelter
  • Institutional Preparedness
  • Individual Preparedness
  • Communication
  • Technology Used
  • People’s Reactions/Behavior
  • Post Disaster
  • Government Response
  • Drills
  • Hospital Preparedness

This activity helped to put us on the same page and to show the team some of the main focuses we can have in the future.
