4 Ways I was able to get out of Creative Block
It may seem hard in the beginning but you will fall in love with the process.
People don’t like to listen. Who agrees with me? We are species made of ego and pride and sometimes that can block us from creating something good if not great. Block us from finding our calling. And as easy it may sound, “look deep within your heart and find what makes you happy and do it”, our brain takes it as some bullshit and moves on through the day without noticing that we are just dragging our organs, our limbs, our body, our heart throughout the day.
So let’s just stop and give way to our heart to lead our body and see what happens.
I have been struggling with finding my calling lately and I don’t think I still got what it takes to achieve that. But before that, I know I need to get rid of my mental creativity block and push my way through in achieving my goals.
Build a Routine
- Being disciplined with my time and day has helped me the most. First thing in the morning I write my tasks with the exact time when I am going to do them. It’s okay to move one or two tasks here or there. But sticking with time is crucial. Put your phone on DND, it’s okay to miss a call, depending on how much time you have left for the task in hand, they can expect a call back from you in 5 to 50 mins. Start building the right amount of expectations of people from you today, this will help you a great deal in the future.
Take 15 mins breaks between each task
- If you think you can work for 2 hours continuously, please don’t. There is no shame in working for 45 mins or 1 hour in a single stretch. If you want your day to be relaxed, easy on your mind and want to feel light throughout the day. TAKE BREAKS.
- I take 15 mins break after every 1 hour of deep-focus work. It started with 45 mins of work and 15 mins break, that way it was easy to move for 1 hour. Love that grove. I had given myself 1 hour to finish this article and we’re already 25 mins in.
- You can make those 15 mins break productive too. What I do is if I am working from home, I will do house chores. You can include those chores in your routine as well. Or just relax for 15 mins or maybe do some stretching/pushups, it’s up to you.
- How I usually spend my breaks are by
- Doing Laundry.
- Putting utensils in the dishwasher.
- Do some breathing exercises.
- Organize house or work desk space. This can be included in leisure activities for me.
- Take shower.
- Call people. Those missed calls, remember?
- Laundry again. You have to dry them. DUH
- Power nap. These are great, put on an alarm and close your eyes. you’ll be surprised.
- Read something. And by something I mean anything. It doesn’t matter.
- or just take a dump
Spend time doing leisure activities
- This is an easy one and can be the most enjoyable. Noticed I said CAN BE that’s because you cannot take pleasure out of leisure activities if that’s what you only take out of this story. If you go to watch a movie after this thinking it’s part of the process, then you are wrong. You need to plan your day first and then add leisure as an activity there otherwise you’ll be carrying the burden and guilt of the tasks not done all day long.
- Some of the activities that I categorize as leisure are
- Watch a series. btw, my new favorite Mare of Easttown
- Meeting family and friends
- Going out for a drive
- Sleeping, sometimes
- Cleaning house
- Of course, these will differ with each person. But you can list down yours and let me know.
Always look for Inspiration around you
- Reading can take you places you’ve never imagined. I am not just talking about fantasy worlds of unicorns and mystic creatures. I am talking about visualizing your realistic future. Imagine yourself reaching your goals, close your eyes, and don’t let that feeling sink in. Let it overwhelm you with excitement and joy. Let it fill your heart with emotions and a tear in your eye. Now open your eyes and work towards those goals and prepare a plan.
- Watching Netflix or Youtube? As long we’re conscious, there is learning in everything about us. Let it motivate you to do more. Help them clear all negative thoughts and believes and eventually get out of the mental block.
- Start documenting your life, start journaling, digital or on paper. The important thing is to write down what you’re feeling. Realize that drive and relive those emotions of regret, achievement, guilt, anger…
- Talk to your partner, family, or friends. You would know who is worth sharing these feelings with. Invite them lovingly, ask for help and they shall genuinely support you to overcome whatever fear or anxiety you have that is blocking you from bringing out your creative self.
I know with all this, you might be wondering, “Geesh, I thought this was going to be easy”, but it’s not. Whatever you’re feeling right now, trust me I have been there and more than once. Just imagine yourself crossing that point and destroying that mental creative block. BTW, this is not just for overcoming creative block. This process should be done in general and I think everyone does try to do it in some form of iteration that suits their lifestyle.
