‘Tis the season!

Hello and Merry Christmas from The Film Profile blog. I am a lover of all things Christmas. So why leave the movies out? Welcome to the very first post under our brand new section- ‘Our Curation’, where we bring you our specially curated list of films to enjoy.

In the mood for a romantic comedy? Or a war drama from the 70s? Is your New Years’ resolution to watch all Leonardo DiCaprio films? Mine is!

So let’s start with 5 Christmas movies that will directly transport you to a place that’s magical, filled with joy, hot chocolate, warmth, love and everything in between.

1) The Holiday — 2006 | Runtime — 136 mins | Genre — Romance/Comedy

The Holiday

If there’s a film that can give you an instant warm and fuzzy feeling this festive season, it’s this one. I’ve seen it many times, and yet, every viewing feels like a new one! The premise of two women with relationship issues, swapping homes over the holidays is so radical, it feels like a dream unfolding. Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz in one film! Add Jude Law’s sexy charm and Jack Black’s comic timing, it’s the perfect recipe for a fulfilling holiday season viewing.

And, did you know, the music is given by the legendary Hans Zimmer? This film is full of surprises, just like the marshmallows in our hot chocolate.

2) Home Alone — 1990 | Runtime — 103 mins |Genre — Live Action/Comedy

Home Alone

How many films can truly take you back to your childhood? Home Alone was a mandatory Christmas viewing for us, the 90s kids. Not-so-surprisingly, it still holds up pretty well for me. The McCallisters are a crazy bunch, and just seeing the chaos that ensues before holidays reminds me of my childhood when we used to visit our extended family over the holidays.

Kevin, an 8-year-old boy, left home alone, was a dream only celluloid could fulfil. Watch this classic and revisit the feeling of being a kid, this Christmas.

3) Fanny and Alexander — 1982 | Runtime — 188 mins |Genre — Drama

Fanny and Alexander

This isn’t your usual Christmas film, but it is, in my view, one of the finest films ever made. Ingmar Bergman’s last film before retirement, this semi-autobiographical film is an experience that will be etched in your veins forever. A story of two kids, and the events that follow after their father dies, shortly after Christmas, it’s only the beginning. The Christmastime shown is utterly beautiful, with every frame casting a spell on you.

Its theme of magical realism is almost like the Christmas Miracle itself; real, only if you believe in it.

4) Klaus — 2019 | Runtime — 97 mins | Genre — Family/Comedy

A still from Klaus

When it’s Christmas time, animated films take the cake for creating a whole world of fantasy. Klaus is a beautiful film, not just when it comes to its humane story, but also the way it looks. The director, Sergio Pablos has used traditional animation to give it a hand-crafted feel, which is such a delight to watch. It shows the back story of Santa and how he came about in our book of Myths. With a generous helping of humour and a dollop of love, Klaus is definitely going to make you feel a lot of things.

And hey, it’s the first Netflix animated film to ever be nominated for an Oscar (Best Animated Feature)! Miss this one at your own risk.

5) The Grinch — 2018 | Runtime — 85 mins | Genre- Family/Comedy

The Grinch (2018)

What’s Christmas if there’s no one to ruin it? Dr. Seuss’ Grinch has taken such a cult status since, that now, ‘don’t be a Grinch’ is a term of endearment. The third screen adaptation of the original, this 2018 animated film is a treat for everyone. The story itself is such a classic that it’s timeless, and for a good reason!

Mr. Grinch’s despise for Christmas and all things festive, his zest to ruin it all for everyone, and the lovely people of Whoville make you feel for him. And who knows, you might end up warming someone’s cold heart this season.
