Hashtags don’t Save Lives, People Do — The Story of the Chibok Girls Kidnapping by Boko Haram

Despite thousands of kidnappings, years of civil war, and near-constant suicide bombing, only one story out of Nigeria’s grizzly war against Boko Haram has truly captured international attention. The kidnapping of 276 schoolgirls from Chibok galvanized a celebrity-led social media frenzy, which pushed governments around the world to dedicated unprecedented time and resources to secure the girls’ release.

With 176 of the girls now rescued or accounted for, the efforts that went into the rescue operation are coming into question as a reinvigorated Boko Haram continues to terrorize Nigeria.
