The news coming out of Walmart is a microcosm for our future labour markets. A change to any one factor (tax breaks, wage hikes, globalization, etc.) will send the trend line slightly up or down accordingly. However, the preference will always be towards cost-savings. The same as it is for you and me at home. There is simply nothing to be done to stop this trend, and rather than picking one factor of choice to turn into our raison d’etre (here’s looking at you “minimum wage”!), it is time we accept our future reality and start looking at solutions that are actually appropriate for the circumstances (how about raise tax rates on public corporations to offset a guaranteed minimum income…just a thought…)
