Oh, how a year can change things. In 2016, Rodrigo Douterte proudly proclaimed “[Refugees] can always come here, and I will even welcome them until we are filled to the brim… I say send them to us.” Today, the Philippines has announced marshal law in an attempt to quash an open rebellion of ISIS radicals which has overtaken Marawi City.

I’m all for countries accepting needy and worthy immigrants of all kinds. However, if recent events in the United States, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and now Oceania tell us anything (and it should, because that’s most of the globe), letting in refugees without an extremely strict vetting process is not an option.
