In February 2020, the G|Code team launched Intro to G|Code, a 12 week program designed for young women of color to uncover interest and aptitude in tech within a supportive, inclusive, and safe environment. The Intro to G|Code Change Makers have shown us their grit, scrappiness, and creativity, as well as their commitment to community and personal growth. We are beyond proud of our Change Makers who will graduate in just a few days, and are thrilled to celebrate their achievements and share some of their stories.

Today, we celebrate Anika Kumar! Originally from Richmond, CA, Anika has amazed us with her curiosity, vulnerability, and desire to help others. Anika aspires to use technology to expand access to mental health services for underserved communities. Learn more about her journey below.

Why did you join G|Code?

When I initially heard about the G|Code program, I saw it as an opportunity to apply myself in a field that seemed intimidating to me. I knew this field could elevate my interest in addressing healthcare disparities at a unique intersection of technology, public health, and sociology. Likewise, I was attracted to the idea of connecting with strong and curious women of color who have similar interests and backgrounds.

What is a favorite moment or memory from G|Code?

One of my most favorite memories with the G|Code cohort of women would game night! It served as a fun opportunity to learn more about everyone’s personality in a less structured way!

How has participating in Intro to G|Code impacted how you see yourself, coding, and your future?

The past weeks have taught me how challenging and rewarding coding can be. I have appreciated how our facilitators are able to present coding languages in a way that makes the material accessible. I feel empowered to pursue tech and continue to explore how coding can supplement my professional aspirations.

G|Code is a visionary non-profit striving to empower Boston’s young women of color by providing them with housing, technical training, leadership development, internship placements, and a resilient and compassionate community to learn from and grow alongside. Many thanks to Bridgette Wallace, Rizel Bobb-Semple, Bailey Siber, and the rest of the G|Code team and volunteers for making the Intro to G|Code program a success!
