In February 2020, the G|Code team launched Intro to G|Code, a 12 week program designed for young women of color to uncover interest and aptitude in tech within a supportive, inclusive, and safe environment. The Intro to G|Code Change Makers have shown us their grit, scrappiness, and creativity, as well as their commitment to community and personal growth. We are beyond proud of our Change Makers who will graduate in just a few days, and are thrilled to celebrate their achievements and share some of their stories.

Today, we celebrate Nebiyat Kebede! Nebiyat defines home as a place where she can feel confident, accepted, and responsible. We are so happy that she has considered G|Code home for her since she started the program! We have been amazed by her ability to take risks and be brave. Nebiyat values developing multiple skill sets and is excited to continue pursuing coding. Learn more about her journey below.

Why did you join G|Code?

The day I saw the application I decided the program was for me. Everyone at G|Code came to learn and experience the tech world through coding. I have loved it very much.

What is a favorite moment or memory from G|Code?

One of the memories I had at G|Code was when we stopped learning in the traditional way and started learning by joining together and working on the whiteboard. I felt confident and used my critical thinking, and it was fun to work with other change makers. Also, we had a bonding night when we played games and talked about Netflix shows. It was unforgettable.

How has participating in Intro to G|Code impacted how you see yourself, coding, and your future?

I learned that in my learning and working journey, it is okay not to know something because there are others who may not know too and still others willing to help. I learned that there are always different ways and techniques of solving problems.

G|Code is a visionary non-profit striving to empower Boston’s young women of color by providing them with housing, technical training, leadership development, internship placements, and a resilient and compassionate community to learn from and grow alongside. Many thanks to Bridgette Wallace, Rizel Bobb-Semple, Bailey Siber, and the rest of the G|Code team and volunteers for making the Intro to G|Code program a success!
