Introducing G|Code’s Change Makers: Sagal Alisalad

In February 2020, the G|Code team launched Intro to G|Code, a 12 week program designed for young women of color to uncover interest and aptitude in tech within a supportive, inclusive, and safe environment. The Intro to G|Code Change Makers have shown us their grit, scrappiness, and creativity, as well as their commitment to community and personal growth. We are beyond proud of our Change Makers who will graduate in just a few days, and are thrilled to celebrate their achievements and share some of their stories.

Today, we celebrate Sagal Alisalad! Originally from Silver Spring, MD, Sagal has amazed us with her kindness and determination. Sagal hopes to pursue STEM so that she can tackle complex environmental and climate issues. Learn more about her journey below.

Why did you join G|Code?

I’ve always wanted to learn how to code, but I never felt “good enough” to actually join a traditional computer science class while in school. Intro to G|Code seemed like a great, safe space to learn coding, while also providing a network of people and mentors to help me along this journey! It honestly felt like a no-brainer to me.

What is a favorite moment or memory from G|Code?

One of my favorite moments from G|Code is when we all did our first “Hello World!” pages using HTML, and all the mentors gave us a round of applause for passing our first milestone as new coders!

How has participating in Intro to G|Code impacted how you see yourself, coding, and your future?

Going into the program, I was first unsure about my place in the tech world, and unsure about if I even wanted to change fields and start a new career path. But having learnt some of the basics, I feel more confident in my ability to make waves in the industry and leave my impact somewhere.
