This summer, we are thrilled to be providing the third cohort of bright Change Makers with an introductory course to web development. Our overarching goal is to empower young female and non-binary people of color to jumpstart their careers in tech! This work would not be possible without our amazing Mentors and Facilitators who help support our Change Makers and provide instruction during the class sessions. Today, we are highlighting Eric Su!

Eric is a Senior Software Engineer at a start-up called Unstack! This summer will mark his second year mentoring at G{Code}, and we are so grateful for the knowledge and commitment he provides to our program.

How did you first get involved with G{Code}?

Rizel, the Director of Curriculum and Engagement at G{Code}, and I are both volunteers with Hack.Diversity, a different organization, and after one of the cohorts finished their internships, Rizel mentioned opportunities to help teach code through G{Code} so I put my name in.

What keeps you coming back to mentor with G{Code}?

G{Code}’s students definitely keep me coming back. Everyone is so ambitious and fun to get along with that it’s exciting to see how much everyone can grow together.

What is your favorite aspect of mentoring?

My favorite aspect of mentoring is definitely how curious and determined the students are. I never leave a session feeling like I talked too much because everyone is so interested that it feels like they would keep devouring any topics that come up.

What are your favorite memories from working with G{Code}?

My favorite memories would have to include the fun “Kahoot” review quizzes at the beginning of each class, as well as the final showcase where everyone shows off the awesome personal websites that they built with all of the skills they learned at G{Code}.

We are so appreciative of the care and dedication Eric shows to G{Code}, and we are grateful for his mentoring of our awesome cohort this summer!
