Many people have heard of the cryptocurrency Bitcoin in recent news. Whether it be about Bitcoin passing $1100 USD recently, skeptics questioning the ‘bubble’ forming around Bitcoin, or why Bitcoin is a good investment. However, many consumers do not realize there are various other crypto-currencies in circulation. I’ll be analyzing ‘Gridcoin’, one form of cryptocurrency, based on three categories:

History: When the cryptocurrency was founded and any major events.

Price: How stable the cryptocurrency is and the value of one coin.

Usage: To what extent is it used at the moment of writing.

Rating: Rating out of 10 and whether its a good investment or not.

The first currency I will be analyzing is Gridcoin.

Gridcoin, an open source cryptocurrency based on the BOINC platform

History:

Gridcoin officially launched on October 16, 2013 by its pseudonym developer Rob Halförd, making it younger than the giant known as Bitcoin (2009). Like almost all of the cryptocurrencies in circulation, Gridcoin works without the intervention of a third party organization. Other than that, not a lot of important events have happened. It’s a lesser known cryptocurrency and isn’t really in major news.

Price:

WorldCoinIndex Price Chart for Gridcoin compared to US Dollars

Since the founding of Gridcoin, it has never passed $0.08 USD. Relatively, the price fluctuates very often. However, it is clearly on a more-or-less upward gain. Gridcoin passed $0.06 earlier this week as well.

Usage:

Gridcoin is a lesser known cryptocurrency. On the Gridcoin website, only 3 services are advertised currently accept Gridcoins: CoinPayments, Crypto-Games, and Cointopay Marketplace.

Rating: 5/10

Gridcoin is a cryptocurrency that is increasing in value overall. However, without a serge of popularity, as seen in other cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, it will never be on the same level of usage. Even if the price of Gridcoin increases, having no place to use said coin completely ruins the value.
