We’ve tried and tested hundreds of them. If you’re looking for a high quality protein bar, here are 5 simple tips to guide you on your good snack journey.

The Protein Bar should have at least 20 grams of protein

Why? Anything with > 20 grams is a bona fide protein bar with the sole purpose of delivering a decent amount of protein. According to the “American Journal of Physiology”, you get greater protein absorption and muscle protein synthesis than portions over 20 grams. A ‘candy’ bar will never accidentally amount to anything near 20 grams of protein.

The Protein Bar should use whey protein

Why? Whey is a complete, high-quality protein, containing all 9 essential amino acids and is low in lactose content. Other sources exist — soy, and even pea which can be more suitable for vegan or other dietary requirements….but if you can, stick with whey.

The Protein Bar should have less net carbs than grams of protein

Why? The “net carbs” is the total carbs minus the grams of fiber. The net carbs are the ones that significantly impact your blood sugar level, other carbs like fiber, move slowly through the digestive system, and most of it isn’t digested at all. If the amount of net carbs is less than the grams of protein, that’s good ;)

The Protein Bar should have enough fat to match your desired calories

Why? Basically, the amount of fat in the bar is only going to affect the calorie content, it’s not required to absorb the protein.

The less ingredients in the Protein Bar, the better

Why? If there are 20 ingredients, most of which you are unable to pronounce, that’s a sign it’s best to look for another protein bar, you should be able to recognize the names of real food in there.
