Forget candy — beard balm could be a gift of love
Poughkeepsie, NY — Within it’s lime-green walls, Darkside Records harbors thousands upon thousands of cd’s, records, tapes, music accessories… you name it. However this past week, they changed things up a bit, as they decided that in addition to their usual consumer goods, they were going to bring some local love to the Hudson Valley.
On February 10th, Darkside Records held its first ever Vintage Valentines Flea Market-an event in which brought together local vendors, artists and musicians to showcase their talents, while at the same time, giving perspective cliental a taste for the finer-and quirkier creations that the Hudson Valley has to offer during this heartwarming season.
From handmade chrome rings to homemade beard balm, venders traveled from across the Hudson Valley to showcase their unique products before an array of live musical talent preformed on Darkside Records small stage.
For Samantha Dickman, it’s events such as these that allow for her newly founded business, Petit Chou, to carve out a niche for itself in the vastly competitive flea market scene. For someone who’s passion revolves around making artisanal soaps, as well as constructing fabric dolls, these smaller scale events are exactly what this busy mothers hectic schedule can handle.
“I’m a newbie at this,” said Dickman. “With that said, everybody here has made this a really cool experience for me. While this is my first flea market, I’ve heard from other venders just how cutthroat and difficult these events can be. Thankfully though they’ve [Darkside Records] made it an easy event where I’ve been able to make my first official sales!”
Once the Flea Market wrapped up, the festivities didn’t stop there. After the market was packed up and put away, a plethora of community-based bands preformed on the small stage that Darkside Records has set up for local bands. In particular, Darkside Records was able to reach out to the Stunads, Timber Beast, The Dante DeFelice, Nick Catania Music, and Freedom Class to give their performances to a group of local music enthusiasts.
“For us, our goal is to bring our community enjoyment through music,” said Darkside Records employee Drew Minhas. “We like to get local bands to come out and preform here at least once a week cause for us, if we can do anything to help local artists get scene, we want to be a part of that.”
While flea markets aren’t the most common occurrence at Darkside Records, there are plenty of opportunities going forward to see live musical talent. For all of Darkside Records listings, check out their website under their events tab.
