Broadway and all of its glory came to Marist College this past weekend for the Marist College Singer’s annual “Night on Broadway.” The Singers club does this show every fall semester and it is continuously a hit as they sing some of Broadway’s biggest songs. It has everything from solos to duets to the entire club as a whole singing these tunes.

As a student, it is an affordable way to get some fun entertainment on the weekend and see the Marist community come together to celebrate the talent of the Singers community. “Throughout my college experience I have known people involved in the Singers community. I always come out and support them, they’re all so incredibly talented,” says a senior at Marist College, Lindsey Marden.

The group of talented individuals is bigger than one might think and the work that they put in together really shows through the performances that they give. For example, the club must move in a whole week earlier than everyone else in the summer so they can do a “camp” to get a head start of practicing before the business of the semester hits everyone.

The club puts in hours and hours of practicing into this show, but the turnout is always worth the work. After all, every penny of the money raised will be donated to the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS organization. This foundation uses donations to help women, men, and children all across the United States by providing them with any needs, such as, medications, health care, meals, counseling, and financial assistance. “The Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS organization is one of the reasons why I love continuing to put hard work into Singers and why we all take these events so seriously. Not only do we love what we’re doing and the show, but we also know that it’s happening for a good cause. Couldn’t be any better than that” says Casandra Sosa, a senior at Marist College who has been a part of Singers throughout her entire college career.

Singers also gives scholarships to their students that are involved. Sosa says, “The president of the club gives a speech about Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS to help everyone realize that the point of the concert is to have fun, showcase talents and raise the money for this important cause.” To raise the most amount of money possible, there is also a raffle during the show as well. Audience members have the chance to buy tickets and enter to win all sorts of prizes before the show or during the show’s intermission.

The show had the entire audience dancing and singing to the classic songs that everyone loves. Everyone’s a sucker for a good Broadway musical number. “I’m not even a huge fan of Broadway, but of course I knew some of the songs. They’re just so catchy, I wanted to get up and dance,” says Marden. Songs from productions like In The Heights, Dear Evan Hansen, Jekyll and Hide, Wicked, Into The Woods, and Mama Mia were featured in this year’s show. This wasn’t just a choir singing together for hours straight, but true performances of the songs chosen with costume changes, set changes, props, etc.

Marist College’s “Night On Broadway” annual tradition won’t come to an end any time soon. It’s easily an escape from the crazy college life to get some entertainment for a great cause.
