“ We walk because we're the ones who can. We walk for those who can’t anymore”

These were the opening words prior to the start of the Walk Out of Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk, which took place right on The Walkway Over the Hudson a little over a week ago.

Thousands gathered to march on that brisk Sunday morning. Most with some coffee and bagels, and all with a mission to make a difference. Suicide still being a major impact on the Hudson Valley community, specifically affecting the areas homeless and teens.

“ To think about how many suicides we’ve had on this very bridge still chills me to the bone “ recounts Diane Missai, one of the head organizers for the event. “We hope this event can serve as a reminder that suicide has impacted so many of here in so many different ways. Whether it’s been someone you know, love, or you yourself have struggled. Its suppose to be a reaching out of sorta, a calling that someone is here for you, whenever you may need it”

Others had plenty to say about the event as well.

“ It’s still so nice to see how many more people come each year” Lisa, a 5-year walker states. “So many people get the chance to tell their stories, which is also really important. Solidarity is so important for things like depression and suicide. It makes you feel so much less alone”

With suicide rates increasing rapidly each year, Walks like these are so important in helping create community amongst strangers.
