This past Saturday the Hudson Valley saw its first snowfall of the winter season.

Streets, cars and yards were covered with four inches of fluffy snow. The white blanket that laid across the area help set the peaceful mood of the holiday season.

However, for kids of all ages the beautiful snowfall means something much different. Days off from school, homemade fires and snowball fights.

Snowball fights are a tradition unlike any other when friends turn into mortal enemies and are punished with flying projectiles. Below are tips and tactics for defeating your enemies in the complex art form of snowball fights this winter season.

Planning Prevents Poor Performance:

Snowball Maker

The preparation is the most important aspect of a snowball fight. Attention to detail is key for success. First of all, it is impossible to win a fight without ammunition. A reserve of pre-made snowballs is key for victory. In order to be victorious, your supply must include a high quantity of snowballs. 21 year old, and child at heart, Mike McGonigle recommends snowballs “the size of a baseball…as a former player it makes them easier to throw.” To aid in the process of snowball creation there are snowball makers that can be purchased on Walmart for less than $10.

Good Defense Leads to a Strong Offense:

Protecting your side of the yard is important in a snowball fight. An ill prepared defense will lead to an agonizing defeat before you even get a chance to take the fight to the enemy. “I highly recommend building a defensive castle to repel attacks and give you something to hide behind,” said Poughkeepsie resident Andrew Whelan. Whelan is right, a defensive wall or encasement will allow you and your squad to efficiently combat the enemy from behind protective barriers.

Make your Offensive Count:

ROTC Cadet Lucas Eliasson was contacted for advice on tactical snowball offensives. Eliasson said, “When in doubt: bold flanking maneuver.” By setting up a base of fire at the front of your enemies defenses it will expose the enemies flanks (blind spots). Set two of your buddies up in a stationary posture to continually hose your enemy from the front. During their bombardment take yourself around the back of the house to conceal your movement. Then surprise attack the enemy from their rear. Your opposition will be left helpless to the onslaught of snow.

Victory Celebration:

By following these tips and tricks you will become victorious over your neighbors and friends. However, don’t forget that the most important part of the snowball fight is the post-war hot cocoa for winners and losers.
