Green Acres Farm on Thanksgiving Eve 2016

The American flag attached to the big Green Acres Farm sign off Rt. 82 is whipping back and forth on a windy Thanksgiving eve morning.

That’s not stopping people from piling in to pick up their favorite pie from Green Acres Farm in Hudson, NY, just a 45 minute drive from Poughkeepsie.

During the Groundhog’s Tuesday meeting last week, our Editor-In-Chief stopped our Thanksgiving week story idea discussion when the subject of pie came up. He made it clear that pie wasn’t a craving he had during Thanksgiving, like it is for many. However, there was a pie that someone told him about on a podcast that was the best pie ever.

“It was so good,” said Kevin Lerner, EIC of the Groundhog referring to the Dutch Apple Pie from Green Acres Farms.

Green Acres Farms bakery is pretty busy this time of year and has a plethora of pies that can be ordered ahead of time or picked up on a walk-in visit.

The pies they have for Thanksgiving include: Apple, Dutch Apple (crump topping), Apple Raspberry, Blueberry, Cherry, Peach, Strawberry Rhubarb, Pumpkin, Coconut Custard, Pecan, Apple Cranberry (with or without icing) and Mince.

“I don’t think any pie sells more than the other, but I think the Pumpkin Pie is the most popular for Thanksgiving,” a Green Acres Farm employee said. “I just think it goes the best with the turkey and the mashed potatoes.”

It was described that they were ‘slammed’ this week, especially the bakery.

“That’s what we want though, you know? We can’t complain about that,” another Green Acres Farm employee said.

It may be too late for you to pick up a pie from Green Acres Farms for this Thanksgiving, but if you are ever in Northern Columbia County, give your taste buds a treat.

Lerner recommends the Apple or Dutch Apple; my childhood brings me back to Pumpkin, which didn’t disappoint.
