Vignettes of Poughkeepsie: Rossi Rosticceria Deli, Thursday, September 15th, 11:30 a.m.
At 11:30 in the morning on the corner of Delano St. and S. Clover St., it is the calm before the storm. On the corner of these two streets is the famous local deli Rossi’s. A family owned deli that’s been producing the best grab and go Italian food in the neighborhood for generations. Especially popular around lunch time, Rossi’s only has a a few customers just before noon as they run in and out of the back door and cellar preparing for the day.
That’s not the only thing happening on these two streets however, it’s quite the busy area with cars parked in ever nook they can parallel park themselves into and trucks stopped to make the new deliveries. On nice afternoons at the start of the school year, there are tables and chairs to sit at, giving the capability to kick back and relax while you enjoy the weather and your meal. Light blue S. Pellegrino umbrellas are a nice touch to provide a little shade if need be. Across the street on either side of the corner, you can often see Papa Rossi, sitting in his folding chair either directing traffic, or simply taking a load off, never without a smile on his face. Trees line the far side of S. Clover St. with the Mid Hudson bridge in view and within walking distance at the very end of the road.
Many Marist students and local Poughkeepsie residents can be seen passing by as they go about their day, between 11:45 and 12:30 you can probably even see some of the Marist cross country team running by, dodging traffic and waving to Papa Rossi as they go. It’s a simple, subtle spot that has created so much meaning for those who decide to kick back under the light blue umbrellas and appreciate it.
