A Warm Welcome to Your Freshman Class President
By: Sydney Crandall
A testament to his academic dedication, Chandler Hunches (’27) was reading his copy of an America and the Enlightenment textbook when I approached him for an interview on the porch of Main Hall. A second semester freshman and biology major here at Southern Virginia University, Chandler is originally from Colonial Heights, Virginia and is a transfer student from the College of William and Mary. Many of you may know him for his recent induction as Southern Virginia University’s 2023–24 Freshman Class President.
Chandler originally planned on attending Brigham Young University-Idaho but after a tour of the campus, his plans changed. He expressed that he places great value on faith and the LDS Church, both reasons for which he finds happiness here at SVU.
An inspiration to Chandler is Joe Buchelle, who is his Writing Composition professor. He enjoys his overall “open-mindedness” and way of thinking, adding evidence to Professor Bouchelle’s statement that he has been “focused on student-centered education.” (https://svu.edu/faculty/joe-bouchelle/)
Chandler’s commitment to education is shown in his possession of a place on the Dean’s List at his previous school, the College of William and Mary. He also took part in the Honors program and, in high school, became well accustomed with technology education. Chandler participated in the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA Future Health Professionals) program as well as held a spot on the varsity swim team of his high school as well. He also enjoys being outdoors including paddle boarding and other activities. Chandler can be found all throughout campus, kept busy by his status as Freshman Class President.
