Breaking Records: Southern Virginia’s Swim Team Recap

Even in the face of losses, Southern Virginia University’s swim team breaks records and shows off their skills during recent meets in Bridgewater and Lynchburg.

In the past few weeks, the swim team has had the chance to compete against the Bridgewater College and Lynchburg University swim teams. Each team had the chance to showcase their talents and, although the Southern Virginia team did not win overall, they proved that they are not messing around.

Below are highlights for each swim meet:

Bridgewater Meet

  • Josh Skabelund- 1st in 50 free 25.02, 1st in 100 free 56.33.
  • Stuart Burbidge- 1st in 200 free 2:01.92, 2nd in 50 free 25.35, 2nd in 400 free 4:28.79.
  • Parker Kam- 2nd in 100 back 1:00.34, 2nd in 200 back 2:19.96, 2nd in 100 fly 1:01.76.
  • Caleb Wynn- 2nd in 200 breast 1:10.77, 2nd in 200 IM 2:20.08.
  • Carson Macdonald- 2nd in 100 free 56.78.
  • Jamie Horne- 1st in 50 free 28.33, 1st in 100 free 1:02.30.
  • Kelsie Drennen- 1st in 200 fly 2:30.68, 1st in 200 back 2:28.68, 1st in 100 fly 1:08.58.
  • Riley Mortensen- 1st in 400 free 4:53.70, 1st in 800 free 10:02.64.

Lynchburg Meet

  • Riley Mortensen- 1st in 1000 free, 1st in 500 free.
  • Cenedra Hooley- 2nd in 200 free, 3rd in 100 free.
  • Kelsie Drennen-1st in 100 back, 1st in 200 back 2:13.15, 1st in 100 fly.
  • Jamie Horne- 2nd in 100 free, 3rd in 50 free.
  • Stuart Burbidge- 1st in 200 free, 1st in 100 free, 2nd in 500 free.
  • Parker Kam- 2nd in 100 back.
  • Caleb Wynn- 200 fly 1:59.66 (school record), 1st in 200 breast, 1st in 200 IM.
  • Josh Skabelund- 1st in 100 fly, 3rd 50 free.
  • Lane Evans- 2nd in 200 back, 4th in 100 back.
  • Josh Axtell- 2nd in 100 fly.
  • Lincoln Garcia- 3rd in 100 fly.

Our swim team’s performances were truly impressive as personal and school records were set. At the Bridgewater competition, Coach Jennifer Moore said,

“The women have never won more events than the men that I can remember, so that was sort of historic for our women’s team.”
