Sometimes, as a Southern Virginia University student, Cookout just doesn’t cut it for me. Food, and more importantly, good food, is essential for a prime college experience. That’s why it’s crazy to me that so many Southern Virginia students don’t know about Buena Vista’s Farmer’s Market. The local Market occurs every Thursday from 2p.m. to 6p.m. in downtown Buena Vista (only a five-minute walk from campus).

*I used to live in an apartment right across the street from the Farmer’s Market, so I would go often and never be disappointed with the groceries I bought.*

My favorite vendor, Kohl Family Farms (they sell fantastic homemade sourdough loaves and goat cheese), has been a part of the Market since the start. Elizabeth Kohl, from Kohl Family Farms, told us that “the Market only started with about four vendors and now, because of the easy going nature of the Market, they are constantly taking on new vendors and allowing small businesses to set up shop. There is usually no shortage of variety at the market.” She also shared some inside information about the Market: “Once fall comes into full effect, they will be setting up a fire pit with hot cider and donuts for sale.”

Every time I’ve gone to the market, everyone has been friendly and welcoming. Some vendors even let you sample their product before purchasing. Becky, from Bella Vista Freeze Dried Goods, had only good things to say about their fellow vendors saying, “We love the camaraderie here and the rich friendship between both the vendors and the locals.

I highly recommend checking out the Buena Vista’s Farmer’s Market next Thursday. Hope to see you there!
