A resurrected club is making efforts and providing tools for the students of Southern Virginia to be successful now and in the future.

For many years, there was no Business Club here at Southern Virginia University. There had been one (once upon a time), but its activity dropped until it died. Then things turned around. Last year, a group of students recognized the impact a Business Club could make on the students of Southern Virginia University and decided to take things into their own hands. Now a year later, the Business Club is an active, student-led organization.

I had the chance to receive information from five different student leaders of the Business Club. These are the following student leaders:

Ethan Ashton (’24) — Chief Executive Officer

Riley Dickerman (’23) — Chief Marketing Officer

Majen Adams (’23) — Chief Financial Officer

Nate Losee (’25) — Chief Operations Officer

Jex Mecham (’24) — Executive Secretary

If you think that Business Club is just for business majors, you would be wrong. Business Club is for anyone and everyone! Ashton stated,

“Anyone from any major is more than welcome to the Business Club. We look forward to gathering with all students who are interested in lifting one another up as we prepare to launch into successful future careers.”

Business Club is for you. Take advantage of this club because it will not only prepare you for the future, but can also help you build connections now. In Adams’ experience,

“Business club has provided me a new opportunity to meet new people that can support me now and in my future aspirations. In addition to building my network, I’m also learning skills that have helped me in my professional development. Business club is for everyone! All of our events provide activities and information that will help you get into grad school, nail job interviews, and succeed in your future career.”

“The purpose of Business Club is to help everyone (business major or not) to grow and develop in their professional discipline by giving tools for success. The vision is to create a group that gives a network and tools needed to take the best next step possible,” (Losee) and, “The Business Club is an opportunity for all students to make connections and learn about how they can further their career. We hope to create a lifelong community of like minded individuals who want the best for each other,” (Dickerman).

This is not something you want to miss. This is a great opportunity to join a community that will push you towards success. But in order to find that success you have to show up. Mecham stated,

“I think that people showing up to events is a great way to show support as well as help you prepare for life after college. We are planning some awesome events to help prepare all students, not just business club members for the workforce. Whether you want to work for a big or small company or even start your own, the Business club gives people the opportunity to learn how to become great business people.”

Some of the past events included a Grad School Workshop where students could ask individuals who have earned an MBA, MPA, and JD/MBA for advice and guest speaker events where they talked about their career journey. Coming up there will be a “speed dating” workshop of interviews with local businesses, and a surprise guest speaker to wrap up the spring semester. Make sure to follow Business Club on Instagram @businessclubsvu as well as on the Knight app, and enable notifications because you don’t want to miss these events!
