Cheer Team Brings Home the Win!
By Marcos da Silva Dias
The cheer team at Southern Virginia University is always there to support our athletics on campus, whenever and wherever. However, this past Saturday on Feb. 12, the team had their own competition in Ocean City, Maryland, going against around 50 other teams. With a score of 90.97, Southern Virginia’s cheer team won the competition and brought the trophy home.
Sheridan Schoen (23’), the cheer captain, said how excited they were to compete. “We had a 6 hour drive to get to the competition and the whole time we were getting hyped in the van. We came together as a family and we came out with the win! After the win we got to celebrate with a traditional run into the ocean with our uniforms. It was pretty awesome to see our hard work pay off.”
Aaron Chadwhick (’22) has been on the cheer team for almost four years now and he added:
“It was a fun weekend where we performed well! Winning this competition was very good since we have a bigger competition on Mar. 5.”
The cheer team practices more than 10 hours per week, including rehearsals and workouts sessions. Anyone interested can apply to be part of the cheer team and people that meet all the requirements can get a scholarship at Southern Virginia University for being a member.
The team will compete at the CCA Cheer Nationals and Collegiate Championship this Saturday, Mar. 5 at 8:00 a.m.
“We’ve worked so hard and grown so much as a team this year and I am really excited for us to be able to showcase that in this coming competition,” said Schoen. “I feel really lucky and grateful for being the captain this year and I just want to tell the team how proud I am of them. Everyone is so valuable and we each play such an important role. I also want to say how thankful I am of having Neely Pendleton as our couch. She has made cheering here at Southern Virginia University an amazing experience.”
