If you are ever looking to have an interesting conversation, Eve Whittacre (’25) and Christine Hansen (’26) are two second-semester freshmen at Southern Virginia University that have fascinating perspectives on the University. I had the opportunity to ask them a series of questions about their thoughts on Southern Virginia University in one of the popular spots of the school — the cafeteria.

Eve’s Interview:

What brought you to Southern Virginia University? What did you love about the campus?

Eve has been taking tours of Southern Virginia University since she was in the 7th Grade, but it was not until her senior year, on a tour with Admissions Director, Craig Lund, that she decided this was the school for her. With the beautiful nature and welcoming atmosphere that staples the campus, she felt that she could truly thrive here. Not only that, but as someone who struggles with anxiety, the small classrooms and school’s genuine care and love for her as a student was an enticing aspect of the school that has followed through on Eve’s expectations for it.

Who’s your favorite professor?

Eve describes Professor Walker as a professor who is passionate about their work and as the “sweetest person I’ve ever met.”

What do you bring to Southern Virginia University that no one else does? What are some of your hobbies/talents?

In high school, Eve limited herself, but has now, at Southern Virginia University, been able to explore her interests and talents. Some of which include: painting skateboard decks, playing various instruments, such as the piano, guitar, uke, voice, and bass. Her musical dedication and talent is something that she believes she brings to the school’s musical program, but she is also always happy to talk to someone, which only adds to the welcoming atmosphere that contributed to her decision to attend Southern Virginia University.

What are you majoring in?

Eve is majoring in English and Music with a minor in Creative Writing and a concentration in Commercial Music.

Christine’s Interview:

What brought you to Southern Virginia University?

Christine heard about Southern Virginia University from her friend and current roommate. She was told that the school had a high acceptance rate, and thus, she decided to further investigate the school. She took a tour with her friend, which was led by one of the school’s graduate students.

What did you love about the campus? What do you love about the campus now?

On the tour with her friend, Christine was able to envision herself at the school, contrary to her other prospective options for college. Now, she finds the professors to be, as she says, “Amazing!”

Who’s your favorite professor?

Christine, like Eve, also appreciates Professor Walker as a teacher. While discussing learning disabilities in class, the challenges of dyslexia were brought up. At one point in the lecture, Christine said that Professor Walker then looked at her. “And you know the stare that teachers give you that says ‘am I right?’ and of course you answer and then everyone is looking at you,” details Christine. She also loves Professor Jolley’s jokes that she cracks during class!

What do you bring to Southern Virginia University that no one else does? What are some of your hobbies/talents?

Christine brings two great things to the school: an unnamed emotional support squeaky chicken, and an elite sense of sarcastic humor.

What are you majoring in?

Christine is majoring in Family and Human Development with a minor in Creative Writing and has hopes of going into a career in Social Work.
