Everything You Need to Know about Homecoming Week

This coming week is the the kick-off to homecoming week and the greeting of Southern Virginia alumni! Here is everything you need to know to make the most of your time during homecoming week.

Monday

Mama Crockett’s Cider Donuts food truck. The Herald/Anna Bowers

Mama Crockett’s Cider Donuts

From 8–11am, students can grab a free tasty Blue Ridge treat from Mama Crockett’s Cider Donuts food truck, which will be stationed on campus. The line forms quickly, so get there as quick as you can before you miss out.

Spirit Games

Spirit games are fun activities that aim to include every student and commence from 11am-1pm. They will be held on Chandler Field daily.

Homecoming Royalty Nominations

Monday is also open for homecoming king and queen nominations, which can be done through the Knight App, or students can visit a table set up outside of the cafeteria.

Student Mural

With the intent of boosting university morale, a new homecoming week tradition will be introduced. Students are invited and encouraged to participate in creating Southern Virginia’s first outdoor mural. The brick wall of the Kimball Center will be transformed into a temporary 12 x 9 foot plywood canvas as students get to paint a template created by artists on campus.

Tuesday

Spirit Games

Tuesday will meet students with more exciting Spirit Games from 11am-1pm. Tuesday’s Spirit activities are meant to surprise the students. “You don’t want to miss it!” said Emily Winslow, assistant director of student life activities.

Commercial Music Concert

Tuesday evening the Commercial Music Concert will be held at 7:30pm–9pm in Chandler Hall.

Wednesday

Last Day for Nominations

Wednesday is the last day for homecoming royalty nominations.

Spirit Games

Spirit games continue and a costume contest will be held from 11am-1pm. Students can vote for the best costume on the Knight App. The winner gets a prize yet to be revealed.

Halloween Dance

In celebration of Dia de Los Muertos, the Latino Club will be hosting a Halloween dance in the ballroom of Main Hall from 9pm-12am. Costumes are encouraged, but if you don’t have a costume the Latino Club has got you covered! The Club members will be face painting the traditional Day of the Dead skull for all students in attendance at the dance.

Thursday

Spirit Games

Students can look forward to more exciting Spirit games from 11am-1pm.

Vote for Homecoming Royalty

Students can begin voting through the Knight App for the three most highly nominated candidates for homecoming king and queen.

Humans Vs. Zombies Interest Meeting

An interest meeting for students curious about playing Humans vs. Zombies will be held at 9pm in the ballroom. The university-wide game will start the Monday following homecoming week.

Friday

Forum

Friday’s Forum will be filled with school spirit rallied by the Spirit Squad and band.

Last Day to Vote

It will also be the last day to vote for royalty.

Service Project

An alumni and student service project will commence from 12pm–2pm. More details to be announced as the date approaches.

Alumni Dinner

The alumni dinner will be held from 5pm–7pm in the Stoddard Center.

Homecoming Concert

The Homecoming Concert featuring on-campus music ensembles will be performing from 7:30pm–9pm in the Knight Arena. The music department has put in countless hours of work to make this concert extra special for homecoming week.

Shenanigans Performance

For visiting alumni and students looking for a good laugh, Shenanigans will be performing from 9:30–10:30pm.

Saturday

Alumni Breakfast

From 9am–10:30am the alumni breakfast will be held in the ballroom.

Tailgate

The homecoming tailgate will be held from 11am-12:45pm. Free, catered food will be available, and games, such as corn hole and volleyball will be set up.

Football Game Vs. William Paterson

Immediately following the tailgate, at 1pm the student body can make its way to the Stadium for the homecoming football game against William Paterson. Homecoming royalty will be announced at the game.

Accolade Concert

From 8pm-9pm, Southern Virginia’s acapella group Accolade will be performing in the dance studio on the second floor of the Kimball Student Center. It is their first concert of the year on campus, and will be performing a variety of pop songs along with some spirituals.

Homecoming Dance

To conclude homecoming week, the anticipated homecoming dance will be at 9pm in the Stoddard Center. The dance will feature live music from Apple Butter Soul. The band performed at two of the previous homecoming dances and won over Southern Virginia students with their lively twists to contemporary covers. In a texted statement Charles Ferry ’20 said, “Apple Butter Soul’s is easily one of the best dance bands in the Shenandoah Valley. Their groove and funk makes you want to dance all night long.”

Students can view the Knight App and the SVU calendar for updates on homecoming week events.
