Morgan Peterson (‘23), a thirteen year wrestler out of Cleveland, Ohio, is one of the biggest assets to Southern Virginia University’s wrestling team. Peterson’s thirteen years of wrestling experience has turned him into an exceptional athlete with the hopes to finish his last season at Southern Virginia as an All-American wrestler.

(How does Peterson plan on becoming an All-American? By sticking to the basics. Every wrestler has a bread and butter move; Peterson’s is a russian tie. This move allows Peterson to isolate a single arm or leg to gain an angle advantage over his opponent.)

Not only is he a great wrestler, but also an outstanding student in the classroom. Peterson finished his biochemistry major credentials last semester, but stayed at Southern Virginia to finish his last season of wrestling. After this semester, Peterson plans to attend school for physical therapy.

Peterson, while juggling between school and athletics, has a mutual understanding of what it’s like to be be bored during his downtime. As other students at Southern Virginia may feel the same,Peterson offers some words of advice with his 4.5 years of experience being a student-athlete. He says,

“throw yourself into work and school and find a new hobby or skill to learn as a release from everything.”

To keep him busy, Peterson immersed himself in his business making custom pens, Peterson’s Pens. He claims that while he may not be very artsy, he loves crafting things with his hands and learning new hands-on skills. His goals for learning new crafts keeps him busy. Things like glassblowing, pottery, and welding are a few examples of what he’s been working on in his free time. Peterson also claims that one of the best ways to keep trudging along is to jam out to your guilty playlist every once in a while. His playlist consist of Shania Twain, his favorite being “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!

Catch Peterson and the rest of the Southern Virginia wrestling team on as they look to close out their season with some big wins! Home matches will take place on Thursday, February 2 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, February 4 at 7 p.m. in the Knight’s Arena.
